About Aomori
Aomori feels far from Tokyo’s crowds: a small, friendly city on Mutsu Bay with mountains rising behind it and snowfall among the heaviest of any city in the world in winter. Cruise calls are mostly in the warmer months, when the region is green, the scallops are sweet and the apple orchards are in leaf or fruit.
The city itself is easily covered in half a day. You can see the huge Nebuta floats up close at the waterfront museum, build your own seafood rice bowl at the fish market, and take a bus to the prehistoric Sannai-Maruyama site. With a full day, many cruisers head inland to Hirosaki’s castle and samurai streets, or to the forested Oirase Gorge.
Aomori suits travelers who like nature, folk culture and local food rather than big-city sightseeing. If you want famous temples and shopping, this is a quieter stop.
Where cruise ships dock in Aomori
Ships berth at Aomori Port, and lines or the port usually arrange shuttle buses to the area around Aomori Station and the waterfront, where the Nebuta museum, A-Factory and fish market are within a few minutes’ walk of each other. Sannai-Maruyama is about 20 to 30 minutes by bus or taxi from the station. Hirosaki is roughly an hour away by train or road, and Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada take about 1.5 to 2 hours each way by road, so they’re best on a ship tour or with a private driver.
Best things to do in Aomori on a cruise
- 1
Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse
culture
This striking red-ribboned building on the waterfront displays several of the enormous paper-and-wire lantern floats paraded through the city during the Nebuta Matsuri each August. You can walk around them, see how they’re built, and sometimes try the festival drums. It’s the best way to experience the festival on any other day.
- 2
Sannai-Maruyama Special Historic Site
history
One of Japan’s largest Jomon-period settlements, occupied roughly 5,000 years ago, with reconstructed pit dwellings, a longhouse and a tall wooden structure built on original post holes. Part of the UNESCO-listed Jomon Prehistoric Sites, it has a good museum with English explanations. The Aomori Museum of Art is next door.
- 3
Aomori Museum of Art
culture
A bright white modern museum known for works by Aomori-born artist Yoshitomo Nara, including the giant dog sculpture Aomori-ken, and large stage backdrops by Marc Chagall. Combine it with Sannai-Maruyama for an easy half-day.
- 4
Hirosaki Castle and Park
history
Hirosaki Castle is one of Japan’s twelve original castle keeps, set in a large park of moats and turrets that’s famous for cherry blossoms in late April and early May. The town also has a preserved samurai district and plenty of apple pie shops.
- 5
Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada
nature
The Oirase Stream tumbles past mossy boulders and waterfalls through deep forest, with an easy riverside path for walking. It ends at Lake Towada, a large caldera lake. The drive crosses the Hakkoda mountains and is especially colorful in mid-to-late October.
- 6
A-Factory and Furukawa Fish Market
food
A-Factory, next to Aomori Station, makes apple cider and sells local foods and crafts. A short walk away, the Furukawa market’s nokke-don lets you buy a bowl of rice and top it with seafood from different stalls, a fun and very local lunch.

What to eat and drink in Aomori
Aomori produces more apples than any other Japanese prefecture, so look for fresh fruit, juice, cider and apple pie. Mutsu Bay scallops are excellent grilled or as sashimi. At the fish market, nokke-don lets you build your own seafood rice bowl. The city’s quirky local ramen is miso curry milk ramen, which tastes better than it sounds. Senbei-jiru, a soup with crackers simmered in broth, comes from the southern part of the prefecture.
Tips for your port day
- Check where your shuttle drops off and how often it runs; the waterfront sights are all walkable once you’re downtown.
- Hirosaki, Oirase and Lake Towada are long trips; book a ship tour or reliable driver and confirm your return time.
- Bring a light jacket even in summer, especially for mountain areas such as Hakkoda and Lake Towada.
- If you buy nokke-don tickets at the fish market, a starter set is plenty for one person.
- Carry cash; smaller towns and market stalls in this region are less card-friendly than big cities.
