About Hakodate
Hakodate was one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade in 1859, and Russian, British and American influences still shape the Motomachi slopes, where an Orthodox church, a Catholic church and grand Western-style public halls look down over the bay. Red-brick warehouses along the waterfront are now shops and restaurants.
A port day usually starts with seafood at the Morning Market, continues up the Motomachi slopes, and ends with the ropeway up Mount Hakodate for a sweeping view of the city’s hourglass-shaped isthmus. Goryokaku, Japan’s first Western-style star fort, is a quick streetcar ride inland.
Hakodate is perfect for seafood lovers, walkers and anyone who enjoys historic architecture. Summers are mild, which makes it a pleasant break from hotter ports further south.
Where cruise ships dock in Hakodate
Many ships now berth at a cruise pier near Hakodate Station and the Morning Market, within walking distance of the Bay Area’s red-brick warehouses and the Motomachi district. On busy days, or for some larger ships, a cargo wharf further out is used, with shuttle buses into town. From the station area, Motomachi is about a 15 to 20 minute walk, the Mount Hakodate ropeway is near the top of the slopes, and Goryokaku is about 15 to 20 minutes by streetcar. All the main sights fit comfortably into a single port day.
Best things to do in Hakodate on a cruise
- 1
Hakodate Morning Market
food
Several hundred stalls near the station sell crab, sea urchin, salmon roe and squid. Try a seafood rice bowl, or at a squid-fishing pool, catch a live squid and have it sliced as sashimi on the spot. Go early, as some stalls close by early afternoon.
- 2
Motomachi slopes
history
Steep streets such as Hachiman-zaka climb from the harbor past the Hakodate Orthodox Church, Motomachi Catholic Church and the pastel Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward. Every slope has a view down to the water. Allow a couple of hours to wander without rushing.
- 3
Mount Hakodate
scenery
A ropeway climbs to the summit, where you can see the city spread across a narrow neck of land between two bays. It’s famous as a night view, but daytime visits are rewarding and far less crowded. Check whether your ship leaves after dark if you want the classic evening view.
- 4
Goryokaku Fort and Tower
history
This five-pointed star fort was completed in the 1860s and saw the last battle of Japan’s civil war. Goryokaku Tower next door is the best place to appreciate its shape. Inside the walls, the reconstructed Hakodate Magistrate’s Office shows traditional carpentry.
- 5
Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses
shopping
These converted warehouses on the Bay Area waterfront house shops selling glassware, Hokkaido sweets and souvenirs, plus cafés and a beer hall. They’re handy for browsing near the port before all aboard.
- 6
Onuma Quasi-National Park
nature
About 30 to 40 minutes north by road or train, Onuma is a lake dotted with small islands linked by footbridges, with the volcanic peak of Komagatake behind. You can walk island trails, rent bikes or take a short boat cruise. It’s a calm escape for nature lovers.

What to eat and drink in Hakodate
Hakodate is a squid town: try ika sashimi, ika somen (squid cut into noodle-thin strips) and ikameshi, squid stuffed with rice. The Morning Market is also the place for uni, ikura and crab bowls. Hakodate’s own ramen style is shio, a clear, delicate salt broth. Lucky Pierrot, a quirky local burger chain, is a cult favorite, and Hokkaido dairy makes for excellent soft-serve ice cream.
Tips for your port day
- Eat at the Morning Market first thing; it’s busiest and freshest early, and some stalls wind down by early afternoon.
- Buy a one-day streetcar pass if you plan to visit Goryokaku as well as Motomachi.
- Wear sturdy shoes for the steep Motomachi slopes, and save the uphill walk for when you’re fresh.
- If your ship sails before dark, go up Mount Hakodate in the daytime and enjoy the shorter lines.
- Pack a light layer; Hokkaido’s weather can turn cool and breezy even in summer.
