Hiroshima cruise port guide
Hiroshima pairs two of Japan’s most important sights: the Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome in the city, and the “floating” torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island. Ships dock south of downtown, so plan on a streetcar, shuttle or tour, and decide early whether you’ll try to fit in both.

About Hiroshima
Hiroshima is a modern, leafy city, rebuilt after the atomic bombing of August 6, 1945, and today it’s a calm, welcoming place with wide boulevards and rivers running through the center. The Peace Memorial Park sits at the heart of it, and visiting is a quiet, reflective experience that many cruisers describe as the most meaningful stop of their trip.
Just offshore, Miyajima is a completely different mood: a sacred island of forested hills, friendly deer, snack-lined lanes and Itsukushima Shrine, built on stilts over the tide flats. Doing both the Peace Park and Miyajima in one port day is common and realistic, but it’s a full, tightly timed day.
History-minded travelers will find Hiroshima essential. If you’d prefer a lighter day, Miyajima alone makes a beautiful outing with a hike or ropeway ride up Mount Misen.
Where cruise ships dock in Hiroshima
Most ships berth at Hiroshima Port in the Ujina district or at a nearby cargo pier, roughly 3 miles (5 km) south of the Peace Memorial Park. Streetcars from the Hiroshima Port stop run to the city center in about 25 to 30 minutes, and ships often provide shuttles. Miyajima is about an hour away by streetcar or train plus a 10-minute ferry from Miyajimaguchi; high-speed boats also run from the Ujina port area and from near the Peace Park, which can be quicker. The Peace Park and museum need about three hours; Miyajima needs at least three to four.
Best things to do in Hiroshima on a cruise
- 1
Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome
history
The skeletal Atomic Bomb Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands across the river from the park, which is dotted with memorials. Don’t miss the Children’s Peace Monument, draped in strings of paper cranes, and the Cenotaph, framed so you can see the Dome through it.
- 2
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
history
The museum explains the bombing through personal belongings, photographs and survivor accounts. It is powerful and often crowded; expect a line at peak times and allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Some exhibits are graphic, so parents of young children may want to preview them.
- 3
Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine
culture
The great vermilion torii appears to float at high tide; at low tide you can walk out to its base. The shrine’s corridors stretch over the water. Check tide times before you go if you have a preference. Miyajima charges a small visitor fee when you arrive by ferry.
- 4
Mount Misen
nature
Miyajima’s highest peak is reached by ropeway plus a short but steep hike, or by a demanding trail from the town. The summit has wide views over the Seto Inland Sea’s islands. Allow at least two hours round trip from the shrine area if you take the ropeway.
- 5
Shukkeien Garden
nature
A classical strolling garden built in the 1600s around a central pond, with bridges, teahouses and miniature landscapes. It was badly damaged in 1945 and lovingly restored. It’s a peaceful spot near Hiroshima Castle if you want a calm hour in the city.
- 6
Hiroshima Castle
history
The five-story keep is a postwar reconstruction surrounded by original moats and grounds. It’s a pleasant walk from the Peace Park and pairs easily with Shukkeien Garden. Check before you go, as the keep’s interior access has been affected by long-term renovation plans.

What to eat and drink in Hiroshima
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is built in layers on the griddle: thin batter, a mountain of cabbage, pork, yakisoba noodles and a fried egg, finished with sweet sauce. Okonomimura, a building packed with okonomiyaki counters, is the classic place to try it. Hiroshima Bay is famous for oysters, grilled or fried, especially in the cooler months. On Miyajima, look for anago-meshi, grilled conger eel over rice, and momiji manju, maple-leaf-shaped cakes filled with sweet bean paste or custard.
Tips for your port day
- If you want both the Peace Park and Miyajima, start with Miyajima early to beat the crowds, then finish in the city closer to the port.
- Use an IC card for the streetcars and the JR train to Miyajimaguchi; both accept the major cards and save time at ticket machines.
- Keep snacks and paper bags hidden on Miyajima. The deer are gentle but will grab food and maps.
- Allow a generous buffer for the trip back to Ujina; streetcars can be slow through central traffic.
- Dress for walking and weather: summers are hot and humid, and Miyajima’s lanes and Mount Misen trails involve stairs.

Hiroshima cruise FAQs
Can you see Hiroshima and Miyajima in one day on a cruise?
Yes, but it’s a full day. Allow about three hours for the Peace Park and museum, three to four for Miyajima, and around two more hours of travel between them and the port.
How far is the Hiroshima cruise port from Peace Memorial Park?
About 3 miles (5 km). The streetcar takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes, and taxis or ship shuttles are a little faster.
When is the Miyajima torii in the water?
At high tide. At low tide it stands on the sand flats and you can walk out to it. Tide times change daily, so check a tide table for your port date.
Is the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum suitable for children?
It depends on the child. Some exhibits show injuries and destruction in detail, so many families preview it or focus on the park’s memorials with younger children.
Is Hiroshima safe to visit now?
Yes. Radiation levels in Hiroshima are the same as elsewhere in the world, and the city is safe, clean and easy to explore.
