About Catania, Sicily

Etna has shaped Catania in every sense. Eruptions and earthquakes destroyed the city repeatedly, and after 1693 it was rebuilt in an exuberant Baroque style using dark volcanic stone, giving its churches and palaces a distinctive gray-and-white look. The volcano still looms on the skyline, often trailing a plume of smoke.

Port days divide between the volcano and the coast. Etna excursions take you up among lava fields and craters, Taormina offers its Greek theater and boutique-lined streets, and Syracuse combines Greek ruins with the island old town of Ortigia. Catania itself rewards a few hours of wandering: Piazza del Duomo, La Pescheria market and Via Etnea. It’s a lively, slightly rough-edged city that food lovers in particular enjoy.

Where cruise ships dock in Catania, Sicily

Ships dock in the port right next to the historic center. Depending on the berth, Piazza del Duomo is about a 10–20 minute walk, and a port shuttle sometimes runs to the gate. Etna’s main visitor area at Rifugio Sapienza on the south side is about an hour’s drive. Taormina is about an hour north by road, and Syracuse about an hour south. Allow two to three hours to see central Catania on foot.

Best things to do in Catania, Sicily on a cruise

  1. 1

    Mount Etna

    adventure

Excursions drive to Rifugio Sapienza at about 6,200 feet (1,900 m) to walk around the extinct Silvestri craters. From there, a cable car and guided 4x4 vehicles can take you higher, conditions permitting. Access to upper areas depends on volcanic activity, and it’s cold and windy at altitude, so bring layers.

  2. 2

Piazza del Duomo and the Elephant Fountain

    history

Catania’s main square centers on a lava-stone elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk, the city’s symbol, known locally as u Liotru. The Baroque Cathedral of Sant’Agata holds the relics of the city’s patron saint and the tomb of composer Vincenzo Bellini, a native of Catania.

  3. 3

    La Pescheria fish market

    food

Just off Piazza del Duomo, this morning fish market is loud and theatrical, with vendors shouting prices over swordfish, tuna and shellfish. Surrounding stalls sell produce and cheese, and nearby trattorias cook the catch.

  4. 4

Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena

    history

One of Europe’s largest Benedictine monasteries, now part of the University of Catania, has grand cloisters and Roman ruins beneath. Guided tours reveal its Baroque architecture and are a quiet contrast to the busy streets.

  5. 5

    Taormina

    culture

About an hour north, Taormina’s Teatro Antico frames views of Etna and the sea. Wander Corso Umberto, admire the views from Piazza IX Aprile and visit Isola Bella below. It’s a popular excursion that can be combined with Etna on a long day.

  6. 6

    Syracuse and Ortigia

    history

Once one of the most powerful cities of ancient Greece, Syracuse has a Greek theater and the cave known as the Ear of Dionysius. Ortigia, its island old town, has a Baroque cathedral built around a Greek temple and the Fountain of Arethusa. Allow a full day.

What to eat and drink in Catania, Sicily

Catania’s signature dish is pasta alla Norma, with fried eggplant, tomato and salted ricotta, named after Bellini’s opera. Arancini here are usually cone-shaped and filled with meat ragù or spinach. Pistachios from nearby Bronte flavor everything from pesto to cannoli. Try a granita, perhaps almond or black mulberry, and taste wines grown on Etna’s volcanic slopes, such as those made from Nerello Mascalese.

Tips for your port day

  • If Etna is your priority, book an excursion or tour; public transport up the volcano is limited and slow.
  • Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes for Etna. The volcanic ground is rough and loose.
  • Visit La Pescheria early; it winds down by early afternoon.
  • Catania is a lively city with petty theft risks. Keep bags close in markets and busy streets.
