Chan May & Da Nang cruise port guide

Ships calling on central Vietnam dock either at Chan May, between Hue and Da Nang, or at Tien Sa port in Da Nang itself. About Chan May & Da Nang

Central Vietnam packs a lot into one stretch of coast. Hoi An is a beautifully preserved trading town of yellow merchant houses, Chinese assembly halls and a centuries-old Japanese Covered Bridge. Hue, the capital of Vietnam’s last royal dynasty, has a moated citadel and grand imperial tombs along the Perfume River. Da Nang, between them, is a modern beach city with long sandy shores, including the stretch Americans knew as China Beach.

Your port matters. From Chan May, Hue is about 1.5 hours away and Hoi An about 1.5 to 2 hours. From Tien Sa in Da Nang, Hoi An is closer, at about 45 minutes, but Hue is a long trip. Either way, it’s a big travel day, and most cruisers pick one main destination.

Hoi An suits shoppers, photographers and food lovers; Hue suits history enthusiasts. Summers are very hot, and the rainy season, roughly September to December, can bring flooding to both towns.

Where cruise ships dock in Chan May & Da Nang

Larger ships often use Chan May, a deep-water port on a bay between Hue and Da Nang, with little nearby except Lang Co beach. Others dock at Tien Sa port on Da Nang’s Son Tra Peninsula, about 15 to 20 minutes from the city center. From Chan May, Hue is about 1.5 hours, Da Nang about an hour through the Hai Van tunnel, and Hoi An 1.5 to 2 hours. From Tien Sa, Hoi An is about 45 minutes. Shuttles to Da Nang or Hoi An are often offered, and ship tours cover Hue.

Best things to do in Chan May & Da Nang on a cruise

  1. 1

    Hoi An Ancient Town

    history

A UNESCO-listed trading port of mustard-yellow shophouses, family chapels and Chinese assembly halls, with the arched Japanese Covered Bridge as its emblem. Silk lanterns hang everywhere. Some sights require a ticket. It’s at its best early, before tour groups arrive.

  2. 2

    Hue Imperial City

    history

Behind thick walls and a moat, Hue’s citadel enclosed the palaces of the Nguyen emperors, who ruled until 1945. Much was damaged during the 1968 Tet Offensive, and restoration continues, but the gates, throne hall and courtyards remain atmospheric. Allow two to three hours.

  3. 3

Imperial tombs and Thien Mu Pagoda

    culture

Outside Hue, the tombs of emperors such as Khai Dinh and Tu Duc range from ornate to serene, set among gardens and lakes. The seven-tiered Thien Mu Pagoda overlooks the Perfume River and is an icon of the city.

  4. 4

    Marble Mountains

    nature

Five limestone hills between Da Nang and Hoi An hide caves, Buddhist shrines and pagodas, reached by stairs or an elevator. Climb for views over the coast. Stone-carving workshops line the road below, though big statues are hard to take home.

  5. 5

    Hai Van Pass

    scenery

The winding coastal road over this mountain pass between Hue and Da Nang offers some of Vietnam’s best sea views on clear days. Some tours from Chan May take the pass instead of the tunnel; it adds time but is worth it when visibility is good.

  6. 6

My Khe Beach and Lady Buddha

    beach

Da Nang’s long city beach, part of what American servicemen called China Beach, has soft sand and beachfront seafood restaurants. On the nearby Son Tra Peninsula, a towering white Lady Buddha statue at Linh Ung Pagoda looks out over the bay.

What to eat and drink in Chan May & Da Nang

Hoi An has its own dishes: cao lau, chewy noodles with pork and greens; white rose dumplings, delicate shrimp parcels; and com ga, turmeric chicken rice. Its banh mi is famous nationwide. Mi Quang, turmeric noodles with a little broth, is the regional favorite. In Hue, try bun bo Hue, a spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup, and banh beo, steamed rice cakes topped with shrimp. Da Nang’s beachfront is lined with seafood restaurants where you pick from tanks.

Tips for your port day

  • Check which port your ship uses before choosing: Hoi An is much easier from Tien Sa, and Hue is more realistic from Chan May.
  • US and Canadian citizens need a Vietnamese visa; confirm with your cruise line whether it arranges one or you need an e-visa.
  • Tailors in Hoi An can make clothing quickly, but a single port day is tight for fittings; stick to simple items or ready-made pieces.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at pagodas and the Hue citadel’s temples, and carry water and a hat; there is little shade.
  • Don’t try to see Hue and Hoi An in one day; the driving time between them leaves too little time at either.
