About Nha Trang
Nha Trang combines a resort-style beachfront with real local character. High-rise hotels line Tran Phu Boulevard, but a few blocks back you’ll find busy markets, pagodas and street-food stalls. The bay is dotted with islands, and the Hon Mun area is a protected marine zone popular for snorkeling and diving.
Port days here are relaxed: a morning at the Po Nagar Cham Towers and Long Son Pagoda, perhaps a soak in a mineral mud bath, then a swim or a seafood lunch by the sea. Boat trips to the islands are another popular choice.
Nha Trang is great for beach lovers and anyone wanting a gentler day between Vietnam’s bigger city ports. Its rainy season, roughly September to December, can bring heavy downpours and rough seas, especially in October and November.
Where cruise ships dock in Nha Trang
Depending on size and conditions, ships either dock at the port in the Cau Da area at the south end of the city or anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore. From there, the main beach and Tran Phu Boulevard are about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, and the Po Nagar Cham Towers about 20 minutes. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab work well. The National Oceanographic Museum is close to the port. Most highlights fit easily into a port day.
Best things to do in Nha Trang on a cruise
- 1
Po Nagar Cham Towers
history
Built between the 7th and 12th centuries by the Cham people, these brick towers are dedicated to a Hindu-influenced goddess and are still an active place of worship. They sit on a hill above the Cai River with views over fishing boats. Cover shoulders and knees; robes are available.
- 2
Long Son Pagoda
culture
A Buddhist pagoda at the foot of a hill, with a large white seated Buddha at the top of a long staircase. The climb rewards you with views over the city. Be wary of people offering unsolicited guiding at the entrance.
- 3
Mud baths
adventure
Nha Trang is known for its mineral mud baths and hot springs, where you soak in warm mud, rinse under mineral showers and relax in pools. Thap Ba Hot Spring Center is the best-known option. It’s a fun, slightly silly and very relaxing experience.
- 4
Island snorkeling around Hon Mun
beach
Boat trips visit the islands of Nha Trang Bay, with snorkeling around the Hon Mun marine protected area. Coral health varies, but fish life can be good. Choose a reputable operator, and check that tours return in time.
- 5
Nha Trang Cathedral
history
Built in the 1930s from stone blocks, this French Gothic-style church stands on a small hill in the center of town. It’s an easy stop on a city tour, with stained glass and a quiet courtyard.
- 6
Tran Phu Beach and Dam Market
shopping
The long city beach is backed by a palm-lined promenade, perfect for a walk or swim. A short taxi ride away, Dam Market sells dried seafood, local snacks, clothing and souvenirs in a large circular building.

What to eat and drink in Nha Trang
Nha Trang’s signature dish is bun cha ca, rice noodle soup with fish cakes in a light broth. Nem nuong, grilled pork sausage wrapped in rice paper with herbs, is another local favorite, as are banh can, small rice-flour pancakes cooked in clay molds. Seafood restaurants serve grilled squid, prawns and lobster. Vietnamese iced coffee and fresh coconut are everywhere, and bird’s nest products from the region are a common, if pricey, souvenir.
Tips for your port day
- Use Grab or metered taxis from reputable companies and confirm the fare in advance for longer trips.
- US and Canadian citizens need a visa for Vietnam; follow your cruise line’s instructions on whether it arranges one or you need an e-visa.
- Visit Po Nagar and Long Son Pagoda early to avoid the midday heat; both involve steps with little shade.
- Rainy-season calls, especially in October and November, can be disrupted by storms and rough water.
- Bring cash in dong for markets, mud bath extras and street food.
