About Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is one of Asia’s great natural sights: tall, jungle-topped pillars of limestone stretching to the horizon, with caves hidden inside and floating fishing communities in their shadows. Legend says the islands were formed by a dragon descending to the sea, which is where the name, meaning “descending dragon,” comes from.
For a cruise visitor, the best way to experience it is from the water. Day boats, often traditional-style junks, wind through the karsts to Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island’s viewpoint and calm coves for kayaking. Hanoi, the capital, is a rewarding but long excursion, with the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Hoa Lo Prison museum, known to American POWs as the “Hanoi Hilton.”
Ha Long suits nature lovers and photographers. The bay is popular and boat traffic is heavy at peak times, and winter often brings mist that softens the views. It can look atmospheric, but it’s not the blue-sky postcard.
Where cruise ships dock in Ha Long Bay
Many ships berth at Ha Long International Cruise Port in the Bai Chay area, while others anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore. From the port, boat trips into the bay depart from nearby piers, often organized by the ship. Sun World Ha Long and Bai Chay’s waterfront are a short taxi ride away. Hanoi is roughly 100 miles (160 km) away, about 2.5 to 3 hours each way by expressway, so a Hanoi day means at least five hours of driving. Bay cruises typically last four to six hours.
Best things to do in Ha Long Bay on a cruise
- 1
Ha Long Bay boat cruise
scenery
The essential experience: a slow cruise past karst islands with names such as Fighting Cock Rock, plus stops at caves and viewpoints. Many ship tours include a seafood lunch on board. Smaller groups and quieter routes toward Bai Tu Long Bay can reduce the crowds.
- 2
Sung Sot Cave
nature
One of the bay’s largest caves, Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) has huge chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, lit with colored lights. Expect a climb of many steps up to the entrance and down through the cave, with views over the bay on the way out.
- 3
Ti Top Island
beach
A small island with a crescent beach and a steep stairway to a summit viewpoint, one of the best panoramas of the bay. The climb takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is hot in summer. You can swim from the beach when conditions allow.
- 4
Kayaking among the karsts
adventure
Kayaks or small rowing boats take you under low rock arches into enclosed lagoons, such as the area around Luon Cave, where monkeys are sometimes spotted on the cliffs. It’s the most peaceful way to experience the bay.
- 5
Hanoi day trip
culture
Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a maze of streets once organized by trade, ringed by motorbikes and street-food stalls. Tours often include Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple, the Temple of Literature, and Hoa Lo Prison, where US airmen, including John McCain, were held. It’s a long day for limited time in the city.
- 6
Sun World Ha Long
family
Close to the port in Bai Chay, this entertainment complex has a large cable car across the bay to a hilltop with a Ferris wheel and views over the islands. It’s a convenient option on a short call or for families.

What to eat and drink in Ha Long Bay
Ha Long is known for seafood: steamed or grilled clams, crab, prawns and squid. Cha muc, fried squid cakes, are the local specialty. In Hanoi, try pho bo, the city’s classic beef noodle soup; bun cha, grilled pork with rice noodles and dipping sauce; banh cuon, steamed rice rolls; and ca phe trung, Hanoi’s rich egg coffee. On bay cruises, lunch is usually a set seafood menu.
Tips for your port day
- US and Canadian citizens need a Vietnamese visa; check whether your cruise line arranges it or you need an e-visa.
- Bay trips can be canceled or rerouted by authorities in storms, especially during the typhoon season from roughly June to October.
- Bring a light jacket in winter, from roughly December to March, when it’s cool and misty; summer is hot and humid.
- Wear grippy shoes for cave stairs and Ti Top’s climb, which can be slippery.
- If you choose Hanoi, accept that you’ll see only highlights; a ship tour guarantees the ship waits if traffic delays the coach.
