About La Palma
La Palma is one of the steepest islands in the world for its size, rising from the sea to nearly 8,000 feet (2,400 m) at the Roque de los Muchachos. It’s far less developed than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, with banana plantations, pine forests and some of the clearest night skies on Earth, protected as a Starlight Reserve.
In late 2021, the Tajogaite eruption on the island’s western side lasted nearly three months and destroyed thousands of buildings. Visitors can now see the new volcanic landscape on guided routes and viewpoints. A port day might combine Santa Cruz’s old town with the Caldera de Taburiente, the southern volcanoes and salt flats, or the eruption zone. It suits hikers and nature lovers; those seeking big beaches or nightlife should look elsewhere.
Where cruise ships dock in La Palma
Ships dock at the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma, right beside the old town. The waterfront Avenida Marítima and Plaza de España are about a five-minute walk away, and the compact historic center can be explored on foot in two to three hours. Taxis and excursions head inland: the Caldera de Taburiente viewpoints and the eruption zone are roughly 45–60 minutes away, the Fuencaliente volcanoes and salt flats about 45 minutes, and the Roque de los Muchachos about 1.5 hours up winding mountain roads. The Canaries are an hour behind mainland Spain.
Best things to do in La Palma on a cruise
- 1
Santa Cruz de La Palma old town
history
Walk the Avenida Marítima, lined with colorful houses and carved wooden balconies, then head inland along Calle O’Daly to Plaza de España, a Renaissance square with the Church of El Salvador. Nearby, the Barco de la Virgen is a concrete replica of Columbus’s Santa María housing a small naval museum.
- 2
Caldera de Taburiente National Park
nature
A huge erosion crater surrounded by cliffs and covered in Canary pine, the caldera is the island’s natural heart. Viewpoints such as La Cumbrecita offer dramatic views; parking there is limited and may require advance booking. Longer hikes inside the caldera need a full day.
- 3
Tajogaite volcano and lava fields
nature
The 2021 eruption created a new volcanic cone and vast lava fields on the western side of the island. Guided visits and official viewpoints let you see the landscape and learn how communities are recovering. Access rules can change, so go with a guide or excursion.
- 4
Fuencaliente volcanoes and salt flats
scenery
At the island’s southern tip, the San Antonio volcano has a visitor center and crater rim walk, and the Teneguía volcano erupted in 1971. Below, the Salinas de Fuencaliente salt pans sit beside a lighthouse and black lava coast.
- 5
Roque de los Muchachos
scenery
The island’s highest point is home to one of the world’s leading astronomical observatories, with telescopes from many countries. On clear days the views over the clouds and the caldera are spectacular. The winding drive takes about 1.5 hours each way.
- 6
Los Tilos laurel forest
nature
In the island’s northeast, this lush forest of ancient laurel trees is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covering the whole island. Short trails lead through misty woods to waterfalls and viewpoints.

What to eat and drink in La Palma
Papas arrugadas with mojo are on every menu, often made with local potatoes. Queso palmero, a smoked goat cheese, is a protected local specialty, and bienmesabe and rapaduras (cone-shaped sweets made with gofio and honey) are traditional desserts. The island’s volcanic soil produces distinctive wines, especially malvasía from Fuencaliente. La Palma also has a tradition of hand-rolled cigars, brought back by islanders who emigrated to Cuba.
Tips for your port day
- Mountain roads are winding and slow; allow extra time and take motion sickness precautions.
- Weather can change quickly at altitude. Bring layers, even if it’s sunny in Santa Cruz.
- Visit the eruption zone with a guide or official excursion, as access rules vary.
- If you sailed from mainland Spain, the clock goes back an hour here. Base your return on the ship’s time, not your phone’s.
