About Tenerife

Tenerife offers year-round sunshine, volcanic landscapes and a surprising range of scenery, from the laurel forests of the Anaga mountains to the moonscape around Teide. Santa Cruz, the island’s capital, is a relaxed working city rather than a resort, with plazas, parks and shopping streets close to the port.

Most cruisers head up to Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to ride the cable car toward the summit or simply admire the colorful lava fields. Others visit La Laguna’s colonial streets, hike in Anaga or relax on Las Teresitas beach. It’s a great port for nature lovers and families. Travelers hoping for a quaint village port should note that Santa Cruz is a busy modern city.

Where cruise ships dock in Tenerife

Ships dock at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a short walk from Plaza de España and the city center, about 10–15 minutes on foot. Taxis wait at the terminal. The tram from the center reaches La Laguna in about 30 minutes. Teide National Park is roughly 1–1.5 hours by road, depending on your destination within the park. Las Teresitas beach is about 15–20 minutes by taxi or bus. The Canary Islands are an hour behind mainland Spain, so make sure you know whether times are in ship or local time.

Best things to do in Tenerife on a cruise

  1. 1

    Teide National Park

    nature

Mount Teide rises to about 12,200 feet (3,715 m), the highest point in Spain, above a vast crater of colorful lava flows and rock formations. A cable car takes visitors close to the summit, weather permitting; hiking to the very top requires a permit booked well in advance. Bring warm layers and be aware that altitude can affect people with heart or breathing conditions.

  2. 2

    San Cristóbal de La Laguna

    history

The island’s former capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its grid of colonial streets a model for many Spanish American cities. Wander past colorful mansions with wooden balconies, the cathedral and the Iglesia de la Concepción. It’s about 30 minutes from Santa Cruz by tram.

  3. 3

    Anaga Rural Park

    nature

The mountainous northeast tip of Tenerife is covered in ancient laurel forest, with hiking trails, viewpoints and remote villages like Taganana. It’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and feels worlds away from the city.

  4. 4

    Playa de Las Teresitas

    beach

This long golden beach near the fishing village of San Andrés was created with sand brought from the Sahara, and a breakwater keeps the water calm. It has a laid-back local feel and seafood restaurants nearby.

  5. 5

Auditorio de Tenerife and Santa Cruz

    culture

Santiago Calatrava’s Auditorio, with its sweeping white concrete wing, is Santa Cruz’s landmark. Stroll the city’s parks and plazas, including García Sanabria Park, and the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África for local produce and cheese.

  6. 6

    Loro Parque

    family

In Puerto de la Cruz, about 45 minutes away, this large zoo and marine park is known for its parrots, penguin enclosure and shows. It’s popular with families but a full outing with the transfer.

What to eat and drink in Tenerife

Papas arrugadas, small wrinkled potatoes boiled in salty water, are served with mojo rojo (spicy red pepper sauce) or mojo verde (cilantro and garlic). Try queso asado, grilled goat cheese with mojo or palm honey, and conejo en salmorejo, marinated rabbit. Gofio, toasted grain flour, is a Canarian staple. Locals drink barraquito, a layered coffee with condensed milk, liqueur and cinnamon. Canarian wines, especially malvasía, are excellent.

Tips for your port day

  • Teide’s cable car can close due to wind or weather, and tickets sell out; book ahead or go with an excursion.
  • Pack layers. It can be warm in Santa Cruz and near freezing at Teide’s summit.
  • The Canary Islands are an hour behind mainland Spain. Always follow ship time for all aboard.
  • Carnival in Santa Cruz, held in February or early March, is one of the biggest in the world. If your call coincides, expect crowds and fun.
