About Port Chalmers
Dunedin was founded by Scottish settlers in the 1840s, and its name comes from the Gaelic for Edinburgh. Victorian and Edwardian architecture, a statue of Robert Burns and a student population give it character. Port Chalmers itself is a small, historic town with galleries and cafés.
Wildlife is the standout. The Otago Peninsula, near the city, is home to the world’s only mainland royal albatross breeding colony, rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and sea lions. A day here often combines wildlife with Dunedin’s sights. Weather can be cool and changeable, even in summer.
