About Falmouth
Falmouth was one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean in the late 1700s and early 1800s, when sugar and rum from the surrounding Trelawny estates were shipped to Britain. The town’s grid of streets still holds stone and timber buildings from that era, including churches, merchants’ houses and a courthouse. Today the modern cruise port sits right next to this living, slightly faded historic center.
Falmouth suits travelers who want a mix of history, river trips and Jamaican culture, and big-ship cruisers who want an easy port with shops and facilities. Its own beaches are limited, so beach lovers need a 30- to 45-minute ride. Trelawny was among the parishes damaged by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, so check that the sights you want are operating.
Where cruise ships dock in Falmouth
Ships dock at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port, built to handle the largest cruise ships. The gated port complex has shops, restaurants and bars, plus a tour departure area. Step outside the gate and you’re in the town, with Water Square and the main historic streets within a few minutes’ walk. Licensed taxis display red PP license plates. Martha Brae rafting is about 15 minutes away, Montego Bay’s beaches around 30 to 45 minutes, and Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios about an hour or more. Check with your cruise line about current conditions after Hurricane Melissa.
Best things to do in Falmouth on a cruise
- 1
Falmouth Heritage Walk
history
Walk the historic grid with a local guide to see Water Square, the Georgian courthouse, the William Knibb Memorial Baptist Church, named for an abolitionist missionary, and merchants’ houses with wooden verandas. Guided walks explain the town’s role in the sugar trade and emancipation. Allow one to two hours.
- 2
Martha Brae River rafting
nature
Raft captains pole 30-foot (9 m) bamboo rafts down a calm, jungle-lined river just outside Falmouth, often stopping for a swim or to sample local crafts. It’s peaceful, about an hour on the water, and one of the easiest excursions from the port.
- 3
Hampden Estate
food
A historic rum distillery in the Trelawny countryside that makes heavy, high-ester pot-still rums prized by connoisseurs. Tours show the fermentation house and the old distillery, followed by tastings. It’s about 30 minutes from the port.
- 4
Luminous Lagoon
nature
Near Falmouth, the water in this lagoon glows blue when disturbed, thanks to bioluminescent microorganisms. It’s best seen after dark, so it’s possible only when your ship stays into the evening. Boat tours let you swim in the glowing water.
- 5
Dunn’s River Falls
adventure
Jamaica’s famous terraced waterfall, which you climb in a guided human chain, is about an hour or more east in Ocho Rios. Excursions often combine it with other Ocho Rios attractions. Wear water shoes and allow a full day.
- 6
Good Hope estate adventures
adventure
A historic plantation in the Trelawny hills offers activities such as zip lines, river tubing and tours of the great house and gardens. It’s about 20 to 30 minutes from the port and a good choice for active families.
- 7
Montego Bay beaches
beach
Falmouth has no major beach of its own, so many cruisers take a shuttle or taxi to Doctor’s Cave Beach or other beaches around Montego Bay, about 30 to 45 minutes away. Agree on a firm return time.

What to eat and drink in Falmouth
Trelawny is famous for its yams, celebrated at an annual yam festival, and you’ll find them roasted or boiled alongside jerk chicken and pork. Ackee and saltfish, escovitch fish, beef patties and festival are everywhere. Hampden Estate’s rums and rum punches showcase local spirits. Try Red Stripe beer, Ting and Blue Mountain coffee. Small cookshops in town serve local lunches at fair prices.
