About Montego Bay

MoBay, as everyone calls it, is a sprawling, energetic city on Jamaica’s northwest coast with resorts strung along its bays, a busy downtown and the famous Hip Strip, a stretch of Gloucester Avenue lined with bars, restaurants and beach clubs. Beyond the city, sugar estates, rivers and hills roll inland, and some of the island’s most elegant great houses look down on the sea.

The port suits travelers who want a beach day, some history and a taste of jerk and reggae. Expect persistent vendors and touts around tourist areas, and traffic in town. Western Jamaica was hit hard by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, and recovery has taken time in places, so confirm that the attractions you plan to visit are open.

Where cruise ships dock in Montego Bay

Ships dock at the Montego Bay cruise terminal in the Freeport area west of downtown. The terminal has shops and a taxi stand; licensed taxis display red PP license plates and post fixed rates. The Hip Strip and Doctor’s Cave Beach are about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, Rose Hall about 20 to 25 minutes east, and the Martha Brae rafting about 40 minutes. Negril is roughly 90 minutes each way. Walking from the port to town isn’t practical. Because of hurricane recovery, check with your cruise line about the latest port conditions and available excursions.

Best things to do in Montego Bay on a cruise

  1. 1

    Doctor’s Cave Beach

    beach

Montego Bay’s most famous beach, on the Hip Strip, with soft sand and calm, clear water. It’s a beach club with a small entry fee, which pays for loungers, changing rooms and a restaurant. It’s about 15 minutes from the cruise terminal.

  2. 2

    Rose Hall Great House

    history

A grand 18th-century Georgian plantation house on a hill east of the city, famous for the legend of Annee Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall. Guided tours mix history with ghost stories, and evening tours lean into the spooky side. Tours take about an hour.

  3. 3

    Martha Brae River rafting

    nature

Raft captains pole long bamboo rafts down a gentle, jungle-lined stretch of the Martha Brae River near Falmouth. It’s relaxing, quiet and suitable for most ages. The trip takes about an hour on the water, plus the drive.

  4. 4

    Greenwood Great House

    history

A great house built by the family of the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, with a fine collection of antiques, rare musical instruments and period furniture. It’s less touristy than Rose Hall, with sweeping views over the coast, about 30 minutes east of the port.

  5. 5

    Negril

    beach

Jamaica’s laid-back beach town, with Seven Mile Beach and the cliffs of the West End, where Rick’s Café is famous for cliff jumping and sunsets. It’s about 90 minutes each way, so a ship’s tour or reputable operator with a firm return time is essential. Check that Negril businesses are operating after the hurricane.

  6. 6

    Hip Strip

    food

Gloucester Avenue is lined with restaurants, bars, craft vendors and beach access points. Grab jerk chicken, a patty or a Red Stripe and watch the scene, or combine it with time at a beach club. Expect lots of vendors offering everything from tours to braids.

  7. 7

    Sam Sharpe Square

    culture

Downtown’s main square honors Sam Sharpe, a National Hero who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion against slavery. Statues and the Cage, an early-19th-century lockup, recall the city’s history. It’s a quick stop on city tours; downtown is busy, so go with a guide.
