About Ocho Rios

Ochi, as locals call it, sits on a bay backed by green hills, with rivers and waterfalls tumbling down to the sea all around. The town is a mix of craft markets, jerk stands, resorts and cruise-focused shopping, all set to a soundtrack of reggae. It’s one of the most convenient Jamaican ports: many of the island’s best-known attractions are within 15 minutes of the pier.

It’s a great stop for active travelers and families who want waterfalls, adventure and Jamaican food. Visitors should be ready for persistent vendors and taxi touts around the port. If you prefer quiet beaches or strolling a historic town, Ocho Rios can feel busy and commercial, but a little planning makes the day easy and fun.

Where cruise ships dock in Ocho Rios

Ships dock at the Ocho Rios cruise pier right beside town. The Island Village shopping area and a small beach are next to the port, and the town center is a 5- to 10-minute walk. Licensed taxis, which display red license plates with PP, wait outside the port with posted rates. Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain are both about 5 to 10 minutes away by road, the Blue Hole around 20 minutes, and Nine Mile roughly 90 minutes inland. Popular sights fill up when several ships are in, so go early. Western Jamaica was hit hard by Hurricane Melissa in late 2025; check that excursions farther west are operating.

Best things to do in Ocho Rios on a cruise

  1. 1

    Dunn’s River Falls

    adventure

A series of limestone terraces where water cascades about 600 feet (180 m) down to the sea. Guides lead groups up the falls in a human chain, holding hands as you climb through pools and over slippery rocks. Water shoes are essential and can be rented. It’s busiest mid-morning; go early or late.

  2. 2

    Mystic Mountain

    adventure

A chairlift carries visitors up a forested hillside to a rainforest bobsled ride, zip lines and a hilltop pool with sweeping views of the coast. It’s only minutes from the port and popular with families. Lines form when several ships are in, so go early.

  3. 3

    Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls)

    nature

A series of turquoise pools and waterfalls in the hills above town, where visitors swim, jump from ledges and swing on ropes into deep water. Guides help with the climbs. It’s less developed than Dunn’s River, with a more adventurous feel, and about 20 minutes from the port.

  4. 4

Nine Mile and Bob Marley’s birthplace

    culture

In the hills of St. Ann, Nine Mile is where Bob Marley was born and where he is buried. Rastafarian guides lead tours of his childhood home, the mausoleum and the meditation rock. The drive is about 90 minutes each way on winding roads, so it takes most of the day.

  5. 5

    River tubing and rafting

    nature

Several rivers near Ocho Rios, including the White River, offer gentle tubing or bamboo rafting through jungle scenery. Some tours combine tubing with Dunn’s River Falls or horseback riding. It’s relaxing and suitable for most ages.

  6. 6

    Green Grotto Caves

    history

Limestone caves near Discovery Bay, about 45 minutes west, with an underground lake and a long history as a refuge for the indigenous Taíno, runaway enslaved people and smugglers. Guided tours take about an hour.

  7. 7

    Turtle Beach and Island Village

    beach

If you want to stay close, the small beach next to the port and Turtle Beach in town offer calm water and loungers. Island Village has shops, cafés and bars, so you can spend a lazy day without a taxi.

What to eat and drink in Ocho Rios

Jerk is a must: chicken or pork rubbed with Scotch bonnet pepper, allspice and thyme and cooked over pimento wood. Ackee and saltfish is the national dish, often served with fried dumplings or festival. Try beef or chicken patties, escovitch fish and curry goat. Drinks include Red Stripe beer, Ting grapefruit soda, rum punch made with Appleton or other Jamaican rums, and Blue Mountain coffee. Roadside jerk centers are often better than restaurants near the pier.

Tips for your port day

  • Use only licensed taxis with red PP plates, agree on the fare before you go, and be firm with unlicensed touts.
  • Wear water shoes and a swimsuit under your clothes for Dunn’s River Falls, and keep your phone in a waterproof case.
  • Vendors can be persistent; a polite but firm no thanks usually works, and you don’t owe anyone a tip for unrequested help.
  • Beat the crowds by heading to Dunn’s River or Mystic Mountain as soon as you’re ashore.
  • Check the U.S. State Department advisory for Jamaica, stick to tourist areas and organized tours, and keep valuables out of sight.
