About Naha, Okinawa

Okinawa feels unlike mainland Japan. For centuries it was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, trading with China and Southeast Asia, and that legacy shows in red-tiled roofs, lion-dog shisa statues guarding doorways, and a cuisine built on pork, bitter melon and island produce. The climate is warm year-round and humid in summer.

Naha is also where you encounter the Battle of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest of the Pacific War, and the continuing presence of US military bases on the island. Many American and Canadian visitors find the peace memorials in the south deeply moving.

A port day can be as easy as shopping and eating along Kokusai-dori, or as ambitious as a long drive to the aquarium. Families, food lovers and WWII history buffs all do well here; beach seekers should know the best beaches are outside Naha.

Where cruise ships dock in Naha, Okinawa

Many ships berth at the Naha Cruise Terminal at Wakasa, about 10 minutes by taxi from Kokusai-dori; on busy days or for larger ships, a cargo berth further out is used, with shuttle buses provided. The Yui Rail monorail runs from central Naha to Shuri Castle in about 20 to 30 minutes. The Peace Memorial Park in the south is around 40 minutes by road, and the Churaumi Aquarium is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours north, which makes it a full-day trip.

Best things to do in Naha, Okinawa on a cruise

  1. 1

    Shuri Castle

    history

The former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kings sits on a hill above Naha and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its main hall burned in 2019 and has been undergoing reconstruction, so check what’s open before you go. The gates, curving stone walls and city views remain impressive.

  2. 2

    Kokusai-dori and Makishi Public Market

    shopping

Kokusai-dori is Naha’s main street of souvenir shops, Okinawan snacks and covered arcades. Just off it, at Makishi Public Market, you can buy fish downstairs and have it cooked at a restaurant upstairs, an Okinawan tradition worth trying.

  3. 3

    Okinawa Peace Memorial Park

    history

On the southern cliffs where the Battle of Okinawa ended, the Cornerstone of Peace lists the names of everyone who died, regardless of nationality, including thousands of Americans. The museum and nearby Himeyuri Peace Museum, which tells the story of student nurses, are sobering visits.

  4. 4

    Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

    family

One of the world’s largest aquariums, famous for its Kuroshio Sea tank where whale sharks and manta rays glide past a huge acrylic panel. It’s about 1.5 to 2 hours from Naha each way, so it uses most of a port day. A ship tour is the easiest way to manage timing.

  5. 5

    Tsuboya Pottery Street

    culture

A short walk from Kokusai-dori, this stone-paved lane has been home to potters for more than 300 years. Small studios sell yachimun, Okinawa’s sturdy, colorful pottery, plus shisa figurines. It’s a quieter, more authentic shopping stop.

  6. 6

    Sefa Utaki and Okinawa World

    nature

Southeast of Naha, Sefa Utaki is Okinawa’s most sacred site, a forest grove of rock formations and prayer spaces, also UNESCO-listed. Okinawa World nearby has the Gyokusendo limestone cave and a recreated Ryukyu village. Each is roughly 40 minutes to an hour from Naha.
