Crystal

Crystal is a classic luxury line, revived in 2023 under Abercrombie & Kent’s parent company, sailing two elegant, refurbished ships of roughly 600 to 740 guests on worldwide voyages and world cruises. Fares include drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and specialty dining, including Nobu Matsuhisa’s Umi Uma. It suits affluent, traditional luxury travelers who enjoy dressing up and long voyages, less so younger travelers or families.

About Crystal

Crystal Cruises was founded in 1988 and launched Crystal Harmony in 1990, building a reputation as one of the world’s top luxury lines with spacious ships, refined service and a loyal, well-traveled clientele. After its former owner collapsed in 2022, A&K Travel Group, the parent of Abercrombie & Kent, bought the brand and its two ocean ships and relaunched Crystal in 2023.

Today’s fleet is two ships, both extensively refurbished for the relaunch. Crystal Symphony carries around 600 guests and Crystal Serenity around 740, with fewer, larger suites than in their earlier lives. Crystal has a new ship, Crystal Grace, on order for 2028, with more planned, and it also runs A&K X Crystal cultural expedition voyages that draw on Abercrombie & Kent’s land expertise.

Itineraries are long and varied: world cruises, Asia and Japan in spring, Alaska, Canada and New England, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, transatlantic crossings, Panama Canal transits and holiday voyages in the Caribbean.

Style, atmosphere and who sails

Crystal is gracious, traditional and quietly glamorous. Guests are typically affluent and in their 60s and older, mostly North American, including many long-time Crystal loyalists. The dress code is elegant casual on most evenings, with black-tie optional nights when many guests wear tuxedos and evening gowns, and ballroom dancing is part of the culture. Ships are mid-sized for luxury vessels, which allows for more amenities, such as multiple restaurants, a large spa and a full theater, while keeping crowds minimal. The pace is relaxed and social, with a strong sense of community among repeat guests.

Is Crystal right for you?

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Nobu Matsuhisa’s Umi Uma restaurant onboard
  • Spacious, refurbished ships with larger suites
  • Stronger entertainment program than most luxury lines
  • Excellent world cruise and long-voyage itineraries

Cons

  • Shore excursions cost extra
  • Formal evenings require packing dressier clothes
  • Very adult atmosphere with few families

Crystal dining

Dining is a highlight. Waterside is the main restaurant, Marketplace serves buffet breakfast and lunch and themed dinners, and casual options include a poolside grill and a café. Specialty restaurants are included: Umi Uma, the Japanese-Peruvian restaurant by Nobu Matsuhisa, and Osteria d’Ovidio for Italian cuisine. Reservations are recommended for specialty dinners, and room service is available around the clock.

Crystal entertainment and activities

Entertainment is more extensive than on most luxury lines, with production shows in the Galaxy Lounge, guest entertainers, live music, ballroom dancing with dance hosts on many voyages and enrichment lectures from experts. Crystal Cove, the atrium bar, is a social hub with a pianist in the evenings.

Crystal kids and families

Children are allowed, and the ships have limited youth facilities, but families are rare and the atmosphere is firmly adult.

Crystal cabins and suites

Refurbishment reduced the number of cabins, so accommodations are now larger than in the ships’ earlier configurations. Most have balconies, and penthouses and suites include butler service, larger living areas and premium amenities. Bathrooms are marble with high-end toiletries.

Crystal drinks and packages

Drinks are included, covering fine wines, champagne, premium spirits, beer, soft drinks and specialty coffees, with an in-suite minibar. Rare vintages and some premium labels cost extra.

Crystal tipping and gratuities

Gratuities are included in Crystal fares, and tipping is not expected.

Crystal loyalty program

The Crystal Society rewards repeat guests with recognition, savings on future voyages and onboard perks that grow with days sailed, plus member events onboard.
